Personal statement to my own struggles of taking the big step of having my own business.
I started my journey nearly 10 years ago after my amazing children had finally happily been shipped of to full time school !!!! I am sure many of you are very aware of the emotional state of mind this puts you at, after you finally manage to drive home after dropping your youngest last child to reception and spending 2 hours crying in the car ! You finally pick yourself up and think to yourself ‘ what do i now do ?’
I had always wanted to be healthy and help others, i thought going down the route of being a personal trainer would give me sight on not only helping with my own children’s nutrition, but possibly getting a job would be a bonus. So many things crossed my mind ‘am i too old to return to education ?’, ‘am i brainy enough to to this ?’ ,’will people judge me ?’. So i thought i would become a personal trainer, i literally thought ‘this cant be hard right’….. so i contacted South Devon college and took my first steps to a new me and the long road i never knew would be ahead !!!!!!!!
I started with the level 2s, at South Devon College, i became addicted. I do believe i i completed most of the courses, starting with gym instructor, children’s fitness, circuits, ( i tried exercise to music, but in all honesty, i have no rhythm what so ever !) water based exercise gave me the music with a class i wanted, but allowing me to not have the required rhythm needed in ETM. Cannot recommend the water based fitness enough, i loved it. After much thought, i wanted to be a P.T but really did not think i had the brains to do it. So i took the option of Sports massage therapist as i though this would be an easy route.
BOY WAS I WRONG !!!!
Sports massage is not easy, it does not come naturally to you at times, and you have to work at it. The anatomy and physiology is horrendous, and many times i just wished id stayed at home and made cupcakes for when i picked up the kids from school !!!!! However, I LOVED IT ! and i not only found my passion and drive of what path my life would take, i found a great tutor who not only became a massive mentor to me, she also became my friend. And i sat there listening and watching her teach and thought to myself, ‘i wish i could do what you do’. I also completed the level 3 P.T diploma following the level 3 sports massage. The level 3 sports massage lead me to wanting more and more. However, still needing to know the mechanicals of injury, how, why and what to do to fix things. i have now earnt the respect of the majority of football and rugby clubs locally and further fields. so i enrolled at Exeter college for the Sports Therapy degree, not going to lie, it was not easy, not only the course work, practical, but also running a house, kids and school runs, earning money and a grown man child. I then returned to South Devon College to do my BSc up in Coaching, as this would help me in my field of clubs with the coaching side and sport psychology. This was a great add to help with rehabilitation and understanding how coaches do their thing !
I started in local rugby clubs in developmental teams pre my degree, and grew my knowledge of putting it all to practice. I had a great mentor in a local club when i first started and she also became a great friend who i trust and ask for advice and reassurance when i find myself not knowing what path to take when obstructions appear and everything feels very cloudy to me. I progressed to become 1xv Therapists of running the medical side and teaching and guiding new therapists coming into the pitch side environment.
I STILL NEEDED AND WANTED MORE !!!!!!!
I applied for the job of my previous tutor at our local college, but had not succeeded, but the position arose again and i finally succeeded, I got the job. I feel in love with teaching individuals and pushing students when appropriate to reach their potential and pushing their boundaries so they will realise what they are capable off. watching them go out in the big wide world and making something of themselves. CPD courses are a great way to add to your Cv, I loved doing courses by John Gibbons, his courses are amazing, and highly recommend them. I am still getting through them to date.
This is my little story of how I got to where I am, which shows you are capable of reaching goals and adapting things to how you need to get where you want. Never think you cannot try !!
Which leads me to where I am now. I struggle to find the time to see all my amazing clients, so I put out an ad to find a sports therapist and sports massage therapist to add to my forever growing business as i have other commitments and opportunities i want to pursue. However, sometimes things do not map out to plan, and puts big spanners in the works ! Which then lead me to thinking, ‘ I was once in a position that i wanted a clinic and my own business but couldn’t afford one, or have support on my own as it is extremely scary’. so why shouldn’t I give that opportunity to other therapists within the bay. Its hard starting out, if I remember, I think I worked for 3/4 months before I started seeing a return and just worked to pay the rent.
I would like to use The Rehab Room clinic as an opportunity for therapists of any level 3 therapists and above to rent the room on either days, mornings or evenings to suit your lifestyle. Having your own brand, advertising your brand in clinic whilst you are in your time, full use of the clinic, having your own storage for products. You can have full support and advice, e.g. treatments on clients if you are unsure or not too confident in your approach of what to do. If your client needs a referral due to out of your scope of practice, and safely returned to you once back at a stage to be treated by by you. full confidence in knowing your clients are returned to you. Advice and help on setting up a business and how to grow. OR you may just want the space to use and grow your business with your own confidence and just get on with it until you are in a position to be able too…..
Opportunity is open to therapists in different areas, please call to discus.
